Our Process

Precision at Its Core
The grading process we've developed is the key to CLeW Grade. Accuracy, consistency, and repeatability are the pillars of the process, ensuring that every lens receives a fair, comprehensive evaluation based on strict standards.

Transparency
The grading of every lens is recorded on our public server to ensure honesty and transparency. Customers can search a lens’s serial number to view its full grading history, offering peace of mind and confidence in the lens's value.

Mechanical Integrity
Rather than subjective performance, CLeW Grade emphasizes the mechanical condition of each lens. Our evaluation ensures that key components, such as focus and zoom mechanisms, operate smoothly and reliably, regardless of the lens’s intended artistic use.

Physical Condition
CLeW Grade assesses the physical condition of the lens, including wear on the housing, markings, and other cosmetic aspects. This ensures customers know the exact state of the lens without affecting its optical character.

Cosmetic Condition
Cosmetic wear is still important for a full picture of the lens’s condition. Our grading process looks at exterior wear and tear, providing customers with clarity on how well a lens has been maintained visually, while ensuring it doesn’t affect the lens's inherent value.

The Grading Scale

Each lens is assigned a grade that ranges from 1 to 10 . For example, a lens that receives a grade of 1 is in very poor condition whereas a lens that receives a grade of 10 is brand new and shows no signs of wear. Every grade also includes a prefix of S, M, or R to designate it's integrity. S for Standard, M for Modified, and R for Rehoused.
